Search Engines, generally, account for over 80% of the traffic arriving at a web site. It is critical your web site ranks well in the Search Engines for a variety of keywords and phrases (those words / phrases typed in by a browser user into the Search Engine search box!). In reality, users rarely look beyond the first page of returned results. So your aim must be to appear on at least the first page, and as close to the top as possible.

Each search engine uses different algorithms (formulae) to rank pages. Unfortunately, the algorithms change on a regular basis, and a high ranking one week does not guarantee the same next week!

There are some common algorithm factors

  • Content (quality and quantity)
  • Title, Keywords, and description in the web page (specifically the Meta Tag area)
  • Content of the page (must reflect the words used in the title, keyword and description)
  • Popularity (measured by links in (and out))
  • Theme - (themes: your site is about wines, music, etc. and the title, keywords reflect this theme)
